The rain ensured that the cool spell persisted on Friday with the maximum temperature dipping five degrees Celsius below normal. While Colaba recorded a maximum of 26.5 degrees Celsius, it was 28.3 degree Celsius at Santacruz. On Thursday, the maximum temperatures recorded at Colaba and Santacruz we re 31.2 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius respectively.
“The drop in temperature is because the overcast skies prevented solar radiation from reaching the earth,” said VK Rajeev director, western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Weathermen said the dip in temperature would persist on Saturday along with continuous rain. According to IMD, the low-pressure area off the Maharashtra-Goa coast on Thursday had not intensified on Friday.
“The low pressure has moved closer to the coast. This has resulted in cloudy skies over the Konkan throughout the day, bringing in continuous rain,” said Rajeev.
“After two months, I finally had a peaceful night minus the air-conditioner. In fact, the cool weather even got me to walk to office. Though it’s a 10-minute walk, I used to cab it up to escape the humidity,” said Sonal Shah, 29, who works in a bank.
Rainfall was recorded in the catchment areas of the six lakes supplying water to the city.
Vihar lake received the highest rainfall, 44.60 mm, followed by Upper Vaitarna, which recorded 39 mm. Tulsi recorded 22 mm.
The early onset of the monsoon has translated into excess rainfall between June 2 and June 8. Except Marathwada, which received normal rainfall, rainfall along the Konkan coast, central Maharashtra and Vidarbha has been 20% above normal. Over one week, the Konkan received 160.4 mm as compared to the normal figure of 76.5 mm.
