Painter Maqbool Fida Husain, or M.F. Hussain as he is known in the industry, once India’s most sought-after painter, died on Thursday of a heart attack, aged 95. The painter was often referred at as the Picasso of India. His works were more celebrated internationally in recent years, as controversy over some nude paintings made him unpopular in his own country.

Hussain is the citizen of Qatar as he was self expelled from india. The paintings in question were created in 1970, but did not become an issue until 1996, when they were printed in Vichar Mimansa, Hindi monthly magazine.

In response, eight criminal complaints were filed against Husain. In 2004, Delhi High Court rejected these complaints of “promoting enmity between different groups of … by painting Hindu goddesses — Durga and sarswati, who later was compromised by Hindus”.

A number of cases were brought against him and a court case related to the alleged obscene depiction of Hindu goddesses in his paintings resulted in the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against Husain after he failed to respond to the request.

The initial success of Husain as an artist was in the 1940s.

In 1947, he joined the progressive Artists ‘ group , founded by Francis Newton Souza. This was a group of young artists who wanted to break with the nationalist traditions established by the Bengal School of art and to encourage an Indian avant-garde, engaged at an international level.

In 1952, his first solo exhibition took place in Zurich and in the next few years, his work was widely seen in Europe and the United States.
In 1955, he received the prestigious Padma Shree Prize by the Indian Government.
Despite controversy, MF’s contribution to the world of the arts cannot be disregarded. He managed to distance himself from traditional painting styles, and also became a symbol of Indian talent abroad. The news of his death was received with sorrow by his contemporary artists, and even by some of those who condemned his art. Perhaps, all Indians should find in their hearts the power to forgive him, and give him due respect now, when he has left this world. In the end, we all answer to God, and God alone.
