Painter Maqbool Fida Husain, or M.F. Hussain as he is known in the industry, once India’s most sought-after painter, died on Thursday of a heart attack, aged 95. The painter was often referred at as the Picasso of India. His works were more celebrated internationally in recent years, as controversy over some nude paintings made him unpopular in his own country.

M.F. Hussain spent the last five years of his life in a self imposed exile, after a long disputed controversy over paintings dating from the 1970s, that were considered by many anti-Hindu. The paintings depicted a nude of Hindu goddess Saraswati, and a nude painting of a woman shaped like India’s map, or “Mother India.” Since January 2010, M.F. Hussain became a citizen of Qatar – and spoke of a desire to return home many times in recent years.

Maqbool Fida Hussain popularly known as MF Hussain has passed away today in London. According to reports, the celebrated artist has died due to heart attack. He was 96.

Popularly known as Picasso of India, Hussain saab has carved a niche for himself across the world with his paintings. Off late the artist was living in Qatar due to the threats he received over some of his controversial works.

Hussain saab has directed two Hindi films, Gajagamini with Madhuri Dixit and Meenakshi: A tale of three cities with Tabu.
M.F. Hussain started out as a poster artist for Bollywood. His paintings sold for millions of dollars later on in his life. The most popular of his paintings in his early career were paintings of horses. One of the most controversial of his paintings, titled “Rape of India” was the one that brought him the exile – many Indians considered the painting a terrible denigration. “Bharat Mata”(Mother India) is a Goddess for Indians, a sacred symbol. Its figurative representation was considered blasphemy.
MF Hussain who is called as Picasso of India has passed away today in London, Royal Brompton hospital.His present age is 95.He has been taking treatment in London for fluids in Lungs.

Hussain is the citizen of Qatar as he was self expelled from india.The paintings in question were created in 1970, but did not become an issue until 1996, when they were printed in Vichar Mimansa, Hindi monthly magazine.

In response, eight criminal complaints were filed against Husain. In 2004, Delhi High Court rejected these complaints of “promoting enmity between different groups of … by painting Hindu goddesses — Durga and sarswati, who later was compromised by Hindus”.

The Hindu gods and Goddesses in February 2006, Husain, because of his nude portraits of people with feelings of hurt was accused of.

A number of cases were brought against him and a court case related to the alleged obscene depiction of Hindu goddesses in his paintings resulted in the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against Husain after he failed to respond to the request.

The initial success of Husain as an artist was in the 1940s.
